Temporary test site - Former dry cleaner - contaminated with PCE
Testsite until medio 2018.

This is a temporary testsite until medio 2018, when the building will be demolished. The building is a residential house with two small businesses.  At the moment the building is empty but heated.

The testsite can be used to test different investigative approaches which can not be tested normally due to tenants.

The testsite are polluted with PCE. The hotspot are situated below the building and the indoor air are heavily polluted. For more information please see the attached documents.

The project aim is to construct an equipment package that can be deployed at sites with possible vapor intrusion through sewers. Based on this package, two sewers at the test site will be investigated with on-line logging of (i) barometric pressure and temperature, (ii) differential pressure between sewer/downpipe and restroom air or between the restroom and outdoor air, (iii) VOC/CVOC-concentration in the sewer/downpipe, (iv) VOC/CVOV-concentration in the restroom. Based on an analysis of the interrelationships of the dynamic parameters, the equipment will be “armed” for automatic extraction of worst-case samples (using carbon tubes) that can be sent to the lab for analysis and used in risk assessments. Test procedures for quantitative estimation of the sewer contribution will be explored.

The purpose of the project is to investigate the effect of ventilating the contamination concentration in waste water pipes and behind water traps. The idea of ventilating the waste water pipe is to dilute the contamination in order to reduce the concentrations that occur in waste water pipes. To further support the investigations of the dynamic in the system, measurements in the waste water pipe is carried out with different spacing behind the water traps, e.g. right behind the water traps, 1 m, 2 m and 3 m behind the water traps depending on how far back it is possible to measure.

Traditional ventilation of sewers and waste water pipes above roofs is at risk of creating a larger spreading of the contamination in the waste water pipe in the building, as it creates an airflow from the nearest manhole and thought to the waste water pipe in the building. This will draw the contamination into the building. If indication of the ventilation of the waste water pipe at the site actually creates a risk of increased spreading of the contamination to the indoor air, a new test will be carried out with the attempt to turn the airflow in the waste water pipe, changing the air intake to the collection pit to an air discharge and install a temporary active suction in order to assess the derived effect.

The purpose of the project is to gain experience of the importance of where the ventilation of the waste water pipe is positioned. Is it e.g. positioned at the top, in the middle or at the bottom, and which mechanisms and conditions govern the intrusion and the leaking from the sewer/waste water pipes to the indoor air? In other words, what kind of dynamic causes a spread from waste water pipes and water traps to the indoor air, and what is the effect of ventilating the waste water pipe?

The project aim is to test an approach to estimate the contaminant mass flux to the sub-slab passive venting system, using various test procedure set-ups. The perspective is that the results can lead to a suggested test protocol for application at other/future sites; a protocol that might enable us to estimate the operating time frames at sites with passive venting systems.

Region of Southern Denmark are planning different tests in the next 3/4 year and your projekt, if accepted, need to be finished before we demolish the building by the end of 2018.
